GR20
This is Corsica's best-known hiking route, the ultimate track. GR20 stands for Grande Randonnée 20 - great hiking route 20. 20 used to be the number for the Departement Corsica (today it is 2A for the south and 2B for the north).
The GR20 starts in Calenzana near Calvi, in the northwestern part, and leads over a distance of 180km to Conca in the southeast of the island. It crosses through spectacular mountain scenery in the central island with high peaks, clear mountain lakes, deep gorges and small villages. The difference in altitude to master amounts to 10.000m in climbs and the same again in descents. This means the GR20 is a very ambitious undertaking. The track is divided into 14 sections with walking times between four and eight hours. You should allow two weeks plus several resting days for the whole trail.
As the track passes through mostly remote country, it is important to plan in advance how and where you will get your supplies. In order to be well prepared for this challenging hike, a fitness programme beforehand is also most important.
