Wandern in der Calanche

Hiking in the Calanche

If you would like to experience the Calanche, you should explore the area hiking. There are several very rewarding hikes that I am going to present here.

Chemin des Muletier

This track is often described coming from the south, but because it is very difficult to find a car park along the small street, it is better to start the hike at the soccer field of Piana. The field is situated along the road from Piana to Porto. About 2km after you have left Piana, after a left bend, turn right into a country lane. The well-marked track branches off to the left, just before the soccer field and runs above the road at an even level. Only towards the end, there is a steep descent, which brings you down to the road leading back to the starting point. The best time of the day to walk this track is the early evening when there is little traffic on the road. The total walking time is about 45 to 60 minutes.

Chateau Fort

Chateau Fort is an impressive, fortress-like rock that can be reached in about 30 minutes. Starting point of this little trail is the car park along the road through the rocky scenery of the Calanche towards Porto, just after re-entering the forest. At the start of the track is the famous dog's head “Tete du chien”. From there, follow the blue and white markers to a viewing platform overlooking Chateau Fort.

Capu d'Orto

Another good hike in the Calanche takes you to the viewpoint on top of Capu d'Orto.
