Foret de Bonifatu – Hiking in Corsica

Past Calvi's airport, the road follows the river Figarella to the Foret de Bonifatu as far as the forester's house, where there is a big car park. Starting here, the track follows a forestry road next to the river. After a little while the road narrows into a wide, well-marked trail which slowly climbs for 2.5 hours until it reaches the swing bridge across the Spasmiata creek. The swing bridge is a real adventure and can sway quite a bit, especially when walked on by several people at the same time. Along the track there are magnificent views over the nearly 2000m high peak of a Muvrella. This mountain is named after the mouflon, a wild sheep which still exists here today. After a steep 30 minute climb, you have reached the Carozzu hut which is serviced and offers accommodation.

The track from the forester's house to the Carozzu hut is a branch of the GR20 and meets the GR20 at the hut. Staying on the GR20, you can carry on to the Asco valley via a Muvrella but we returned from the hut to the car park along the same way we came. At the end of the hike you can cool off in one of the natural swimming pools. There is a small restaurant with outside dining area at the forester's house which also offers rooms.
