Foret d'Aitone

Foret d'Aitone – Hiking in Corsica

The forester's house above Evisa on the road to Col de Vergio is a good starting point for long and short walks in the Foret D'Aitone and to the waterfalls of the Aitone river. Follow the forestry road at first which will take you to a bridge across the Aitone river. The trail then climbs up to the Ponte de Casterica. Leave the main track (to Col de Cuccavera) after the bridge and keep left following the river. There are marvelously fragrant European Black Pines growing here and it is hard to imagine that it is possible to grow these giant, up to 40m tall trees as bonsai. Finally you have reached the Piscine d'Aitone after crossing some rocks. These are several natural swimming pools, providing a welcome cooling in the summer. Below the pools are some magical waterfalls (see photo). The way back to the forester's house takes about 20 minutes. The whole hike is 2 hours long, takes you through diverse terrain and is a fantastic outing with the rock pools and the waterfalls. If you would like to continue from here, follow the interpretive nature trail about chestnuts which branches off the road and then descends to Evisa. The trail leads through ravines and chestnut groves. The history of the sweet chestnut and its uses is explained on plaques along the way (only in French).
