Corte
Corte used to be the stronghold of the Corsican resistance and from 1755 to 1769 it was the capital of an independent Corsica under Pasquale Paoli. For many Corsicans the town embodies the uniqueness of their culture and it is still secretly considered the capital of the island. Corte's importance is underlined by the fact that it is again a university town and by its location in the center of the island surrounded by high mountains.
Citadel and Old Town
Corte's landmark is the citadel, its oldest part, the so called “eagle's nest”, perching high up on a cliff. Just underneath the towers of the fortress is the viewing platform “Belvedere” from where you have a beautiful view to the surrounding mountains. Below the citadel lies the old town, tightly packed with gray houses separated by narrow streets and alleys.
Beside the charming old town, Corte is popular as a base for day walks into the adjoining valleys.
