Capu d'Orto – Hiking in Corsica

The climb of the 1294m high Capu d'Orto is a magnificent hike with stunning views overlooking the Gulf of Porto, the Scandola peninsula and the mountain area around the Paglia Orba. The ascent crosses through diverse vegetation with beautiful pine and oak forests, macchia and the bizarre rock formations of the Calanche. It is best to set off early to reach the summit before the midday heat.

Starting point is the soccer field in Piana which is situated on the road from Piana to Porto. Follow a small country lane to your right, about 2km out of Piana after a left bend. The difference in altitude is about 820m and the whole hike takes about 6 hours. The first part of the track to Bocca di Piazza is mostly in the shade. The trail winds its way up slowly and continuously and is also suitable for children. From Bocca di Piazza to Capu d'Orto the track is exposed to the sun and considerably steeper but you will be rewarded with impressive views.

Up to Bocca di Piazza the route is well-marked and easy to find. Simply cross the soccer field towards the far left corner and then follow the signs to Capu d'Orto. From Bocca di Piazza to Capu d'Orto the track is not very visible in places, because it crosses a ledge but it is marked by cairns. Keep your eyes open to avoid losing your way. Strong shoes and a secure step are a must. On your way back, at Bocca di Piazza choose the route via Bocca Larga and le Lion. It takes slightly longer, but there are beautiful views over the Gulf of Porto and the Scandola peninsula.
