Corsica's Regions
Corsica's scenery is incredibly diverse. In the far north, the cape Corse extends into the sea like a pointing finger – a paradise for sailing and scuba diving. Adjoining in the northwest are the desolate wilderness of the Desert Agriates and the fertile hills of the Balagne.
In the west, the nature reserve la Scondola is the last strip of untouched coast in the Mediterranean. The Calanche, with its bizarre red granite rock formations, is known as one of the most beautiful areas of Corsica. In the southwest, where the climate is mild, you can admire numerous cultural sites from early history and evidences of the Megalith culture which are nowhere else in the Mediterranean area as plentiful as here.
In the far south the visitor finds the limestone cliffs of Bonifacio dropping vertically into the sea. The southeastern region, one of Corsica' s tourism centers, is famous for its bays and beautiful beaches. Only a few kilometers further the Bavella valley begins, a paradise for mountain hikers and canyoning enthusiasts. Finally, in the east, fertile alluvial land determines the landscape of the Plaine Orientale with its orchards while, in the northeast, extensive chest nut groves cover the hills of the Castagniccia.
Above all, in the center of the island, towers the Monte Cinto with nearly 2800m. The beauty of this alpine mountain world with its peaks, valleys, gorges and forests is captivating not only for proven mountain lovers.
Due to its beautiful sandy beaches and bays, Corsica is a popular destination for families with children. For this group a travel health insurance is particularly advisable. Not all claims are covered by your insurance at home, so it is wise to find out beforehand.
It is just this diversity which makes Corsica such a well-liked holiday destination. No matter what activities you enjoy doing: hiking, climbing, scuba diving, sailing or just relaxing, Corsica has got something to offer for everybody. It is a real alternative because of its typical Mediterranean climate and the original, untouched nature which rather appeal to the individual traveler than mass tourism.
